In 2013 I saw some work by Callum Innes for the first time. His ‘Histories’ series fascinated me and I began, not to try to imitate Innes’ work, but to research his methodologies.

This resulted in a series of watercolour paintings in which my concern was for the phenomena produced by overlapping translucent layers of colour taken from a highly restricted palette, applied in rectilinear blocks.

My primary interest was both for the formal / compositional potential of this approach as well as for the technical characteristics of the materials I was working with, including the support itself - in this case paper. The narrative content I invite the audience to engage with in this series is the processes of making.
